What is wikiHomePages?

wikiHomePages is a website that uses photos and stories contributed by the public to build and display visual histories of family homes and other residences of historical significance.

Do I have to be a former resident or related to someone who lived at an address in order to contribute photos taken there?

No. Limiting contributors to former residents or their descendants would mean missing out on some great homes. Historians, friends and the general public are all encouraged to share their photos and stories about a specific address.

Can I create a HomePage for an address outside the U.S. or Canada?

Not yet. We can only build HomePages for homes in the U.S. and Canada at this time. But we look forward to building HomePages for addresses around the world in the future.

Why only ten photos?

Some photosharing websites can overwhelm visitors with too many photos and too much scrolling. Like Twitter, we limit content size in order to keep navigation simple and uniform.

Some people have lived in the same home for 20 or 30 years and might want to create a HomePage for their current home. Do you only post pictures of former homes?

Residents are welcome to build a HomePage for their current house or apartment. The reason we emphasize former homes is because of their obvious association with the past and the need to preserve their memories.

I already have a website celebrating a former home. Why should I post my photos on wikiHomePages?

wikiHomePages can help you share your current online tribute with more people. Contributors can add a link to their external website or blog, as long as the linked webpage is directly relevant to the history of the address.

Why must I provide my email address in order to contribute photos?

We request that information in case we have a problem creating or maintaining your HomePage and need to contact you. We respect your privacy and will never sell your email address to a third party.

Why aren't HomePages posted as soon as I submit my photos?

We appreciate your patience. As the site grows, we plan to automate the procedure and post new HomePages more quickly.

Do I have to use real names when describing people in the photos?

Not if you don't want to. You might use generic terms such as father, mother, aunt or uncle. You can even leave the caption area blank. It's up to you.
